After the discovery of the new lands in the 16th -17th centuries England became interested in the New World too.
on board the ship the “Mayflower”. They wanted to start a new life and to have no problems with the church.

They set up a settlement and called that part of the country “New England”.
The huts of the first settlers looked like this.
In 1620 the first settlers in America had a very hard life.
The colonists faced cold and hunger. They had to hunt and fish for food. Children and women went to the woods to gather berries.
They looked like chickens, but were much bigger.
In the woods of New England there were a lot of wild birds.
These were turkeys. They weren’t afraid of people and it was easy to catch and to kill them. Their friends Indians taught the first settlers how to hunt turkeys.
The colonists started to farm the land. The Indians gave them seeds of new plants: corn and pumpkin.
In the autumn of 1621 the colonists had their first harvest. It was rather good. They understood that this would help then to live through another winter.
The colonists decided to have a special dinner. They wanted to thank God – to give Him their thanks for many things.
They thanked God for living through the first hard, cold and hungry winter in the new place.
They thanked God for their first rich harvest and a chance to live safely through another year.
The feast lasted for the whole three days. The settlers invited their friends Indians to take part in this thanksgiving dinner.
Wild turkeys were on their table. Since then the turkey has become a symbol of Thanksgiving day.
