JAMES FENIMORE COOPER
(1789-1851)

Fenimore Cooper was a XIX century American writer. The son of rich landowner, Fenimore Cooper was brought up on the family estate, Cooperstown, in New Jersey. James Cooper attended Yale University, where he was a member of the Linonian Society.
His historical romances depicting colonist and Indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune.
Among his more famous works is the Romantic novel “The Last of the Mohicans”, often regarded as his masterpiece.
“THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS”
The chapter begins with the forest scene when Hawkeye leads his men towards the rear. Then, a furious battle ensues between them and the Hurons.
The Hurons are defeated and put to flight. Magua and two fellow warriors rapidly retreating to the village. Heyward and Uncas follow the Hurons and their hostage.
On a precipice the hostage of the Hurons refuses to go farther. Magua threatens her with a knife but is struggling within himself when one of his fellows stabs her in the bosom. Maddened, Magua springs for the Huron when Uncas, leaping from a ledge, falls between them and Magua stabs him in the back while he is still prostrate. Arising anyway, the Mohican gathers enough strength to kill the murderer of Cora but is himself finished off by three more strokes of Magua's knife.
After all, a bullet from Hawkeye's rifle wounds Magua and he falls to his death.
LITERARY ANALYSIS
These actions are the climax of the novel. The opposing forces are brought into tragic confrontation and the final pursuit is ended;
- this text doesn’t end as the reader expect as Uncas, one of the main characters, dies;
- the plot is an essential part of the story;
- the title is appropriate because it reflects the main idea of the story;
-the author uses both direct and indirect methods of portraying characters;
- the author sympathizes to the main characters.
EXPRESSIVE MEANS OF SPEECH
James Cooper uses expressive means of speech, such as epithets, metaphors and similes in this story to strengthen the emotional impact on the reader
Example of a simile: “though [I’m] not a vaunting and bloodily disposed Goliah”;
examples of epithets : “shadowed vistas ”, “peaceful and slumbering scenery”, “verdant and undulating surface of forest”, “the treacherous quiet”;
examples of phraseologisms: “it seemed as if the foot of man had never trodden”, “weighing the chances … in his mind”.
CONCLUSION
James Cooper wrote a lot of historical romances depicting colonist and Indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries. So, this story is typical of Cooper's prose.
“The Last of the Mohicans” is a very informative story. It has a lot of new words and expressions. The language of this story is authentic and the plot keeps the reader in tension from the beginning to end.
